Yes You Can!

positive attitudeThis past weekend we celebrated Australia Day. It was the first time I have been able to see proper Australia Day celebrations since coming to Australia. In fact, I started thinking that it is customary to always have floods on this particular day, since that is what has been happening every year since I have come here.

My husband and I went to the celebrations close to the Gold Coast Art Centre. There were so much to see and do! I don’t know what I loved the most but the pig races must have been among the top two. Those little pigs were too cute for words.

At the end of the day we came home, happy and content. But there was one thing that wouldn’t leave my mind; I couldn’t stop thinking about the wood chopping competition.

Now you may ask why I would be bothered by a wood chopping competition. To be honest, I think what really bothered me was the fact that I had given up on so many things in my life.

There is just no end to the creative excuses I have come up with in the past. When I have to do something, it is always easy to hide behind my age, my children, my husband, the amount of work I have to do…

Watching those men wielding their axes, made me want to run and hide in shame. I took a video to show you all how awesome they were.

These men are all over 60. I’m not even 50 yet but I have been finding excuses for everything from my lack of exercise to the amount of time it’s taking me to set up my new website. But no more excuses. I can and I will do what I have to do to reach every single goal I set for myself for this year.

And I want you to realize that you can as well. As January draws to a close, think about the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Are you still headed straight towards your goal? Or have you, like me, started hiding behind excuses for not doing what you are supposed to be doing every day?

After watching the wood choppers, I am believing in myself again. If they can do that at their age, I can do what I have to do at my age. And so can you!

  1. As I continue to age, I have come to realize that reaching my goals has absolutely nothing to do with others. I no longer need praise to enjoy the feelings of accomplishment when I finish a task. Perhaps I learned through years of abuse that reaching my own goals is the most fulfilling thing I can do. Praise and awards are simply a sweet affirmation, but they are no longer the goal. I am no longer driven to receive the approval of others. Perhaps that is the lesson of the woodchoppers. They did it to prove to themselves that they were still viable and capable of doing tasks that are generally assigned to a younger man. I remind myself that I am the one who sets the deadlines in life. If I see a butterfly that begs to be photographed, I now give myself permission to take the precious few minutes needed to satisfy my own desires. Today’s lesson: I have learned that I too am the woodchopper!

Peggy, you are such an inspirational human being. You made me think. I have found that many who have suffered abuse, in a weird way were seeking approval from their abusers. I would say that it’s a form of Stockholm Syndrome. However, when you reach the point where you don’t need anyone’s approval or praise, I think you are finally really free from the bonds the abuser put on you. Amazing!
